L&M
Created by the company Liggett & Myers, L&M is a brand of cigarettes produced by Philip Morris Companies Inc., now known as Altria Group. They aren't very common in the continental US, but are sold almost everywhere in Puerto Rico, Israel and Egypt. They are also widely available in Europe.
Camel cigarettes were originally blended to have a milder taste in contrast to brands that were considered much harsher at the time of its introduction. In addition, they were promoted, prior to official release, by a careful advertising campaign that included "teasers" which merely stated that "the Camels are coming" (a play on the old Scottish folk song, "The Camels Are Coming"). This marketing style was, in fact, a prototype for attempts to sway public opinion that coincided with the United States' entry into the First World War, and later the Second World War.
Another promotion strategy was the use of a Circus camel, 'Old Joe', which was driven through town and used to distribute free cigarettes. Old Joe was used as the model for the camel on the package. The brand's catch-phrase slogan, used for decades, was "I'd walk a mile for a Camel!"
Winston cigarettes are manufactured by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. They are named for Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered. The brand was introduced in 1954, and became the best-selling brand of cigarettes in the United States. It held the #1 spot from 1966 to 1972, thanks to the successful marketing slogan "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should." In the last national survey in 2001, Winston ranks sixth in market value.
During the 1980s, Winston cigarettes became the most popular brand in Puerto Rico, probably because of their marketing "Winston y Puerto Rico: No hay nada mejor" ("Winston and Puerto Rico: There is nothing better"), as well as it's cultural association with the "salsa sensual" or "salsa erotica" movement. In the early part of the 21st century, Winston was still one of the top 10 brands in the United States.
Red & White is a brand of cigarette made by Philip Morris. The history of what is now a global company can be traced back to Philip Morris's 1847 opening of a single shop on London's Bond Street, selling tobacco and ready-made Cigarettes. On Mr Morris's death, the business was taken over by his wife Margaret and his brother Leopold. In 1881 the company went public, Leopold Morris joining Joseph Grunebaum to establish Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum, Ltd. This partnership was dissolved in 1885 and the company became known as Philip Morris & Co., Ltd. The company finally left the founding family's control in 1894, when it was taken over by William Curtis Thomson and his family. Under Thomson, the company was appointed tobacconist to King Edward VII and, in 1902, was incorporated in New York, by Gustav Eckmeyer. Ownership was split 50-50 between the British parent and american partners. Eckmeyer had been sole agent for Philip Morris in the US since 1872, importing and selling English-made Cigarettes. 1919 was a crucial year for the company. It saw the introduction of the Philip Morris coronet logo, the acquisition of the Philip Morris Company in the US by a new firm owned by american stockholders, and its incorporation in Virginia under the name of Philip Morris & Co., Ltd., Inc. By the end of the next decade, the company had begun to manufacture Cigarettes in its factory in Richmond, Virginia; in 1924, what was to become its most famous brand, Marlboro, was introduced.
